The return of captain Kevin Brown inspired Widnes Vikings to register a superb 30-10 victory over Warrington Wolves tonight at the Select Security Stadium.
But the game was interrupted for eight minutes immediately after Ben Westwood had opened the scoring after six minutes. Referee Robert Hicks took both sets of players off the field after a spectator threw a flare onto the field, eventually bringing them back for Gareth O’Brien to add the conversion.
But from then on the Vikings took over, and they opened their account through Cameron Phelps, adding two more first-half tries both from Stefan Marsh. Jack Owens could only convert Marsh’s first touchdown to give the Vikings a 14-6 interval lead.
In the second half they stretched their lead to 26-6 through tries by Lloyd White and captain Brown, who sold an outrageous dummy to cross the line, with Owens converting both.
Warrington got on the scoreboard again with a try from Ben Currie after 66 minutes, but Owens rounded off the night with a late try to seal victory, pushing the Vikings into seventh place in the table, while Warrington have now lost three matches in a row.
