Gleeson and Watson returns “discussed”

Salford Red Devils coach Iestyn Harris has admitted that the club had discussed a playing return for both Ian Watson and Martin Gleeson this weekend.

Neither of the two men, who are now retired and on Harris’ coaching staff, have been named in his 19-man squad for the trip to Hull FC, but in the build-up to naming that squad, Harris admitted that talks had taken place about them potentially putting their boots on again.

Both played as recently as last season – but Watson hasn’t played in Super League since 2002.

“It’s something we’ve internally discussed,” boss Iestyn Harris said.

“It’s not new, is it? Two or three years ago (Hull FC coach) Lee Radford came out of retirement and played for Hull when they were going through similar injury issues.

“We’d have to get dispensation for that to happen but certainly Gleese is not too long retired. He’s only six to eight months retired and Ian’s the same.”
