Yere scores four as Eagles blast Hawks

Menzie Yere made an early bid to be the League Express player of the week tonight when he scored four tries in Sheffield Eagles‘ convincing 10-54 victory at Hunslet Hawks, as the Eagles bounced back from their shock 46-6 defeat last Saturday to London Broncos in the Summer Bash at Blackpool, consolidating their hold on third place in the Championship table.

But at half-time the Eagles were leading 6-10, and few spectators would have expected the second-half blitz that unfolded at the South Leeds Stadium.

The Hawks had taken the lead after 23 minutes from a try by Jack Lee, converted by Danny Ansell, and it wasn’t until the 32nd minute that the Eagles troubled the scorers, when Yere scored a try that wasn’t converted.

The Eagles finally took the lead right on half-time, when Sam Smeaton touched down and Kyle Briggs converted.

But in the second half the Eagles added 44 points, with three more tries from Yere, as well as tries from Tony Tonks, Scott Turner, Rob Worrincy, Michael Knowles and Quentin Laulu-Togagae, with Briggs adding five conversions and Knowles adding one.

Hunslet’s only second half score was a try from Liam Mackay.

A full report from this game will feature in Monday’s edition of League Express.
