Westminster has joined the campaign to crown Kevin Sinfield MBE as BBC Sports Personality Of The Year.
The Chairman of the Parliamentary Rugby League Group, Greg Mulholland posted an Early Day Motion supporting the Leeds Rhinos treble winning skipper.
Mulholland is Liberal Democrat MP for Leeds North West, whose constituency includes the Rhinos home at Headingley Carnegie Stadium, and Sinfield’s own local MP Debbie Abrahams (Labour) for Oldham East and Saddleworth have led the charge.
By this afternoon they had been joined as signatories by Yvonne Fovargue (Labour, Makerfield), Ian Lucas (Labour, Wrexham), Marie Rimmer (Labour, St Helens South and Whiston) plus there is local interest ahead of the awards in Belfast with Jim Shannon (DUP, Strangford) also signing the Early Day Motion.
Part of their motion reads: “That this House believes that Kevin Sinfield MBE is a fantastic and deserving contender for the 2015 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award; feels Sinfield deserves this recognition this year in particular due to his superb leadership of Leeds Rhinos, who he led to win the treble for the first time, winning the Super League Grand Final, the Challenge Cup Final, and the League Leader’s Shield.”
Greg Mulholland commented, “Leeds Rhinos legend Kevin Sinfield MBE is a very worthy contender for BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
“He finished off an inspirational and trophy laden career with the most astonishing season, winning the treble of Super League Grand Final, League Leader’s Shield and the Challenge Cup as well as continuing to be one of the most impressive captains in any sport and a wonderful example of and off the field.
“I am delighted to highlight Kevin’s strong case for BBC SPOTY in Parliament and am pleased other MPs are backing this too. He would be a deserved winner and for him to win would be a fitting way to round off his remarkable rugby league career,” added Mulholland.
