Bateman dreaming of captaining England one day

Wigan Warriors and England forward John Bateman has revealed he’d love to lead out his country as captain one day – but says he’s solely focussed on his club career with Wigan at the moment.

Bateman was one of the stars of the 2015 season, eventually earning selection to Steve McNamara’s England squad for the Test series against New Zealand last year.

He will play a key role for the Warriors in 2016 as they look to avenge last year’s Grand Final defeat to Leeds and, speaking to the club’s official website, Bateman admits that he harbours a dream of captaining England one day – but until he secures a regular spot in the side.

“I think that’s one of the things you always dream of doing,” he said.

“I just want to work hard now and become one of the players who gets selected for England year-in year-out. If that ever came then I’d grab it with both hands but I’ve just got to keep focused here and play well each week for Wigan.”
