Wigan Warriors winger Josh Charnley has admitted he’d be open to having a crack at becoming Wigan’s goal-kicker throughout 2016 – but says he’d be equally as comfortable being on reserve for the role.
Matty Smith – who is still with Wigan – did the role for the most part in 2015, but he vacated it and Matty Bowen took over for the latter part of the season.
As well as Smith, the Warriors have George Williams and Sam Tomkins who could also kick goals – but Charnley has previous with the kicking tee, kicking 72 goals during his career to date in Super League.
And he said he’s been putting in some work and would be fine with taking it on if that’s the way Shaun Wane wanted to go.
“I’ve been practicing some goal kicking and my foot is bright red,” he said.
“It’s a role that you’ve got to fit into your game on top of everything; we’ve had Pat who was phenomenal and then Matty Bowen who could slot them, so if I can keep my hand in you never know.
“If I’m third or fourth choice, I’ll take that.”
