Walmsley laughs off touchline sulk

Despite putting in a dominant display on Friday, it appeared one St Helens star was less than impressed at the end.

Alex Walmsley cut a frustrated figure when he was hauled off the pitch late in the second-half just eight or so minutes after entering the field for his second stint, and he appeared to make his feelings known.

With the game already won at 44-4, Keiron Cunningham opted to rest Walmsley with games against Leeds, Wigan and Widnes all coming up.

However, Walmsley insisted that his strop was all good natured fun with the coaching staff.

“Obviously I wanted to be on as long as possible,” said Walmsley.

“We were going well and I’d have liked to stay on, but we have a lot of important games coming up. The game was dead and buried by that point. So it was more a bit of banter rather than being upset.

“We had a laugh about it in the sheds. He (Keiron Cunningham) joked that I spat my dummy out. It was one of those games where we were playing some nice football and you want to be involved, but there was nothing on the lines of being angry or anything.”

Despite winning four of their five Super League games to date, Saints still have their critics, but Walmsley insists they aren’t bothered about other people’s perceptions.

“Write us off at your peril,” he said.

“It doesn’t bother us now. The year we won the Grand Final every single person wrote us off, so we don’t mind it. We’ve got a dogged mentality, so write us off at your peril, that’s the message coming out of our camp.

“We’ve been building nicely these last few weeks. Since the Salford game we’ve kicked on and addressed some issues.”
