New Wakefield coach Chris Chester has insisted the squad he has inherited at the club is more than capable of surviving in Super League – but has said he’s already looking at bringing in new faces.
Chester was confirmed as the new Wildcats boss on Wednesday, replacing outgoing coach Brian Smith just three weeks after Chester left Hull Kingston Rovers.
And at his first media conference in charge, Chester hinted he is looking to bring in fresh blood to “add a little bit of quality” – but says what he’s got, he’s happy with.
“I think the squad’s certainly capable of surviving,” said Chester. “It’s a very good squad, a fit and a healthy squad at the minute, and you need a healthy one over Easter.
“We’ll try and add a little bit of quality there but, if not I’m more than happy with what’s available. We should have six or seven players back next week which brings some competition to guys playing.
“I’m just looking forward to the challenge of coaching this side and the signs I’ve seen so far are pretty positive. I said to them it’s a blank canvas.
“I don’t know really too much about these players here – I think there’s only Craig Hall I’ve actually coached – so they will all get an opportunity these next two or three weeks to shine and try and impress.”
