Steve Tyrer couldn’t hide his delight after scoring his 1,000th point in Halifax colours.
Tyrer’s ninth conversion in Fax’s 80-4 rout of amateur side Lock Lane took him to the milestone, four-and-a-half years after joining the club.
The prolific goalkicker admitted that he had no idea about the record until Fax captain and kicking-tee collector for the day Scott Murrell told him of his accomplishment.
“I’m extremely proud,” he said.
“I take great pride in playing for Halifax, it’s something that means a lot to me.
“I didn’t actually know about it until I kicked it and Scott Murrell came on and told me. They’re nice things to pick up along the way, but the team performance far outweighs that.”
Tyrer is still some way off the club’s all-time leading points scorer, however. That record belongs to Ronnie James, who scored 2,191 points in a 12-year spell at Halifax.
Halifax are now into the last 16 of the Challenge Cup, and Tyrer admits he’d like to have a crack at one of Super League’s elite.
“Your head says as easy a game as possible,” he said.
“But if you get a glamour tie, a Leeds away or a Saints away, that would be fantastic. We’re in the hat and wherever we go we’ll have a good time and have a dig.”
The Challenge Cup draw takes place this Thursday on BBC Radio Four’s Today programme at 8.30am.
