Wakefield Trinity Wildcats coach Chris Chester revealed he is aiming for three more victories from their final eight league games to secure what looks like an increasingly certain place in the top eight.
The Wildcats, undoubtedly last year’s whipping boys in the regular season, are now just four points off the top four after yet another incredible win, this time a 25-24 success against Catalans Dragons.
The win came courtesy of a dramatic late drop goal from half-back Jacob Miller, and Chester said afterwards that he is not thinking about anything except making the eight.
“There’s still eight games left and I think we need another three wins to consolidate that place,” he said.
“It’s a tough period for us coming up next month; we’ve got some big important games and we’re playing teams in and around us. We know how quickly it can flip but it was a hugely spirited performance yet again.
“What we want to do as a group primarily is we want to consolidate our place in the eight. We’re not getting carried away and once we’re in the eight we can look upwards and that’s another step in the right direction today. We know there’ll be a rough patch along the way but we’re enjoying the ride. It’s a great feeling to be producing stuff like this.”
Chester took time out to praise Miller for his performance, as well as joking he had very little confidence in the half-back to slot the decisive one-pointer.
“When he got the ball on halfway I thought: what are you doing! I thought he had no chance, but I’m pleased that he got it through the posts.
“It shows the confidence of Milky at the minute; he’s enjoying his rugby and I thought he was superb again for us.
“I’m really delighted we came back, not just once, but twice. That shows the belief in the group and the spirit we’ve got – we found a way to win the game in the end. A draw was a fair result in all fairness but I’ll take this every single day of the week.”
