Aston expresses interest in Ridyard

Sheffield Eagles head coach Mark Aston has declared an interest in Leigh halfback Martyn Ridyard.

29-year-old Ridyard hasn’t featured in Leigh’s last two games following the arrivals of Josh Drinkwater and Travis Burns from Wests Tigers and St Helens respectively.

It is understood that Ridyard is keen on securing regular first-team action for the rest of the year, with his contract set to expire with the Centurions at the end of this season.

Ridyard has been an instrumental figure in Leigh’s rejuvenation over recent years and made his 200th appearance for the Centurions in April.

A move to the Eagles would be desirable for Ridyard due to their full-time status, however finances would be a likely stumbling block in any move.

“I’m looking for people in any and all positions,” Aston said.

“Ridyard is a class player and there’s no doubt about that. It’s unfortunate what Leigh have done there to be honest.

“We’re looking for people who want to play for Sheffield Eagles. Quite a lot of these players want to play for Sheffield Eagles, but they are not performing. We’re looking for plenty of people with the right mentality that want to come and play and with a smile on their face.”

Sheffield are two points above Oldham in the Championship, who occupy a place in the relegation zone.

Aston saw his side comprehensively defeated by Halifax on Sunday 60-22, and he labelled the performance as ’embarrassing’.

“In 16 years of coaching at this great club this is probably one of the lowest points. It’s embarrassing.”
