Sam Tomkins has dropped out of Wigan’s 19-man squad to face Widnes.
The England full-back hasn’t missed a game since making his Super League return against Hull FC last month, but head coach Shaun Wane has decided to rest his star man as a precaution after scoring three tries in five appearances.
“Sam had a bit of swelling after the Hull KR game so he won’t play this week,” Wane told the club’s official website.
“It’s just a precaution but we won’t take any risks with him.”
Lewis Tierney is expected to take his place while Dan Sarginson is likely to feature after being a late withdrawal for the club’s victory over Hull KR.
Meanwhile, Chris Houston and Setaimata Sa have dropped out of Widnes’ squad for the clash with the Vikings. The pair didn’t feature in victory over Castleford last week, and have been replaced by Gil Dudson and Ed Chapelhow.
