Widnes Vikings coach Denis Betts has stressed that although their top eight place is almost secure, the club have no interest in standing still – insisting they’re looking up.
The Vikings’ victory at Leeds last week – coupled with Salford’s unsuccessful appeal into their six-point deduction for breaching the salary cap – means that Widnes are all-but-sure of a place in the top eight come the split later this month.
But that isn’t enough for Betts, who has identified a strong run of form between now and the end of the Super 8s to give his side the best possible chance of finishing as high as possible.
The top four looks a long way away for Betts’ side – but he insists that they have to be confident of finishing as high as possible in 2016.
“We’re looking up,” he said.
“We’ve got 10 games and 20 points to play for and anything is possible with that amount of points on the line.
“If we can pick up a large majority of them – which we can, we’ve shown that this year; we’ve beaten Leeds, we’ve beaten Wigan and we’ve beaten Hull – you can have a confidence surrounding how high you can finish.”
Betts’ side face St Helens tomorrow knowing that victory would move them to within two points of the fifth-placed Saints.
