You may have been forgiven for thinking you’d gone back in time had you caught any audio commentary of England Youth’s Test with France on Tuesday.
With the commentary shouting out names like Poching, McNamara and Hanley, it may have felt like a trip down memory lane – but instead, it was a glimpse into the future.
England may well have fallen short, losing 24-20 to the French in Barcares, but the young stars of the future certainly put in an encouraging showing.
Wigan youngster Umlya Hanley, son of the great Ellery, was included in England’s squad for the trip – and while Catalans coach Steve McNamara was in England preparing Les Dracs for Thursday’s game at Warrington, his son was back in France representing his country!
Ben plays for the City of Hull Academy and is a Skirlaugh junior.
Meanwhile, Huddersfield youngster Kobe Poching – son of former Leeds forward Willie – was another name with a famous relative included in England’s squad for the game.
You can watch the highlights above; the second Test takes place on Friday, before the mini-tour finishes with a game against Catalans’ under-16s on Monday.
