Hawkyard returns to Keighley

Keighley Cougars coach Rhys Lovegrove has challenged every member of his squad to earn, and then keep their place in his team.

One player Lovegrove will now have at is disposal again is Ritchie Hawkyard who, after announcing his retirement before Christmas, has once again changed his mind and will link up with the squad again for training this week.

“I am going to stick with what I have got for now,” said Lovegrove.

“I have had a discussion with the players and the boys that have been training and they have the opportunity to grab a spot.

“The one thing I have been clear about is that at the start of pre-season they set their own standards to what they believe would allow us to play the style that we want.

“By being here they have the chance to reach those standards, but I won’t drop those standards now to allow them to play.

“The standards they set are what I am judging them on, so if they don’t hit them I will have to look elsewhere.”

Hawkyard initially re-signed for the club in October before announcing his decision to quit. However, he has not been able to keep away and will pull his boots on once again.

His return to Cougar Park will come after he took part in a three-day coast-to-coast walk in memory of former Huddersfield Giants youngster Ronan Costello, who passed away in 2016.

The 33-year-old fullback was one of eight walkers trekking the 125 miles from Barrow-in-Furness to Saltburn Cliffs to raise funds.
