Hull and District League plan to revive prestigious Council Cup

THE Hull and District Open Age League plans to revive its prestigious Council Cup – which committee members believe to be the oldest knockout competition in amateur Rugby League – this year.

Delegates met last Tuesday at the city’s Embassy Hotel when, following a discussion led by Gareth Williams of the old Reckitts club, the thumbs-up was given to round-robin fixtures (therefore ensuring more than one game for all teams) taking place this year.

Hull committee members and interested clubs will reconvene on Wednesday, April 2 (7.00pm) at the Blue Bell, Lowgate, to hopefully take the initiative further.

The Hull and District League has, in playing terms, been dormant for several years, with local clubs opting to participate in the Rugby Football League’s Yorkshire Men’s League instead.

However, the YML is not offering localised fixtures for Hull in the forthcoming season, League Express understands.

Joe Kemp, the Hull League’s vice-chair and PRO, said: “Hopefully all clubs interested will make a show at the Blue Bell and put in any further suggestions.

“The committee would then arrange a fixture list with games mainly – as always was the case – played in the evenings, therefore not interfering with any league or cup games clubs may have.

“The final will – as previously, once Hull Kingston Rovers have been contacted – be played on the Robins’ main pitch, with local dignitaries invited to do the honours.

“There will be no financial outlay for teams entering.”
