PAUL ROWLEY has backed former teammate and friend Chris Chester to do “a good job” at Castleford Tigers after taking over as head coach on an interim period following the axing of Danny McGuire.
McGuire was given his marching orders earlier this week following Castleford’s dismal 30-12 home defeat to Huddersfield Giants with director of rugby Chester taking the reins on a short-term basis.
With Red Devils boss Rowley knowing just how difficult coaching is given the climate he has had to work under at Salford, he has backed his former Halifax teammate to thrive at The Jungle.
“We will know if it’s good or bad to play them at the end of the game on Sunday. I am good friends with Chris Chester, we go back a long way from when we were teammates at Halifax,” Rowley said,
“He will stand in there and do a good job. I have a lot of sympathy and empathy for Danny as it’s a tough game we are in.
“Who knows what will happen. Castleford have been on their own journey and are certainly trying to find consistency in their performances.
“They are a capable side that we will respect.”
However, when asked about a potential link to Castleford in terms of taking over as head coach, Rowley dismissed such talk, saying: “you won’t get me answering any such questions.”
