Allan Coleman on the Widnes Vikings revival

WIDNES VIKINGS coach Allan Coleman reckons the return of a number of players has added real spice to his club’s run-in to the regular season.

He was able to name talented and experienced halfback Tom Gilmore and forward Lewis Hall for the first time since late June, as well as Jake Maizen, the Australian fullback who sustained a concerning neck injury last month, as his side won 20-14 at Barrow.

That was a third straight victory after both Sheffield and Batley were seen off – and Widnes stretched the successful sequence with an eye-catching 30-14 win at Featherstone on Saturday to maintain their hopes of making the play-offs.

Now come key home games against Hunslet (this Sunday) and London Broncos sandwiched around a visit to Halifax.

And Coleman pledged: “While all games in this league are tough, we’ll go all out to win all three and see where we can get to.

“We are a good team when we play the way we can, and having more players available again is great.

“It not only gives me more selection options, but creates competition and improves the level of training we can do, because at times, we’ve been down to a dozen fit bodies.”
