‘This isn’t done’ declares Kai Pearce-Paul after England’s Wembley pain

KAI PEARCE-PAUL has warned Australia that England have what it takes to claw back the 1-0 deficit when the teams head to Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool this Saturday.

“This isn’t done – 100 percent. This is game one,” said Pearce-Paul.

“We’ll see what happens, but this not finished yet.”

Londoner Pearce-Paul was not the only southerner in action for England at Wembley, with Basingstoke-born backrower Mike McMeeken also featuring off the interchange bench.

The 31-year-old admitted the hosts were not good enough to beat Australia, but insisted the defeat did not change their outlook.

“They were clinical with the ball and they took their chances, and we were off massively,” McMeeken said.

“The completion rate was way down and that low percentage against a top-quality nation like Australia, you’re going to get it handed to you.

“There’s a lot of things to go at, we’re pretty disappointed, but there are a lot of things we can work on for next week.

“We wanted to win all the games. One down, we didn’t get it this week, but we’re going to Everton now and it’s an exciting time.”

Croydon Hurricanes product Pearce-Paul was winning only his fourth England cap and was facing the Kangaroos for the first time on the international stage.

Despite the defeat, the 24-year-old still found some positives to take from the day.

“It’s still an amazing day and I’m grateful to have been able to make my debut in the Ashes,” Pearce-Paul said.

“It’s something you dream of as a kid, but at the same time I’m disappointed. You don’t want a game to go like that and we didn’t play to how we practised.

“I guess a positive from that is there is a lot more to grow from there and bring into next week.

“I’m proud to have been out there in front of the family, but disappointed in the result.”
