Jack Welsby sent to hospital as Paul Rowley rues ‘over-confident’ St Helens

PAUL ROWLEY felt his St Helens side were guilty of complacency after failing to get the better of Warrington Wolves.

The 24-14 defeat was compounded by injury to star fullback Jack Welsby.

Saints threatened an unlikely comeback when Tristan Sailor made it 18-10, having been three scores down, to set up a nail-biting conclusion, but Warrington put the result to bed soon after.

“I thought we dipped our toe in the water defensively, which is unlike Saints,” said Rowley.

“Maybe there was a little bit of over-confidence. We came here really confident but, ultimately, Warrington did a good job.

“They were more aggressive than us, were a lot quicker around the ruck, and they put us to the sword.”

Rowley confirmed that Welsby could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines after being taken to hospital with a shoulder injury sustained while scoring his try on the hour mark.

He said: “Unfortunately, I think that is going to be in the Matty Lees category (the prop could be out for ten weeks with a knee injury).

”We have got a couple of our biggies missing for the foreseeable, so that is another challenge for us.”
