OLIVER PARTINGTON feels he is back where he belongs – and after looking on as Wigan Warriors achieved success in his absence, is desperate to help bring more silverware to the town.
The forward came through the club’s renowned Academy and started his career in their well-known colours.
But when the Warriors won Super League in 2023 and then claimed all four available trophies – the World Club Challenge, Challenge Cup, League Leaders’ Shield and title – in 2024, he was with Salford.
Partington then joined Catalans Dragons, but halfway through a two-year deal, returned to Wigan on a contract to 2030, with hooker Kruise Leeming heading to the French club on a season-long loan as part of the deal.
The 27-year-old made his eighth appearance of the season as Wigan lost their 100 percent record in all competitions this year when Huddersfield sealed a 34-16 win at The Brick Community Stadium on Saturday.
That took his total number of games for the club to 100, and he reflected: “As a kid, it was a dream to make just one Wigan appearance, so to reach three figures is brilliant.
“It was a bit strange looking on as Wigan won those trophies when I was away, because I knew so many of the lads and the staff, and while I was a touch envious, I was happy for everyone at the club.
“When I left, it was down to salary-cap stuff and wanting to play more games, and I think those three years, especially the one in France, where I put myself out of my comfort zone, taught me a lot about myself.
“It was a great experience, but I guess there was a sense of unfinished business with Wigan, so I was happy to come back, and hopefully the club have got a more rounded player and person.
“Knowing so many people here has helped me settle back in quickly, and in some ways, it feels like I haven’t been away.”
Next up for Wigan is Friday’s big Easter derby at St Helens, and Partington added: “I haven’t played in one for a few years, so the chance of being involved is great.”
