PAUL MCSHANE is looking forward to creating more history with York Knights ahead of the club’s first Magic Weekend.

The veteran hooker is no stranger to the event, in which he last featured as a Castleford Tigers player in 2023, but the experience is a new one for most of his teammates amid the Knights’ first-ever season in Super League.

York kick-off this year’s two-day festival – being held at Hill Dickinson Stadium for the first time – against Huddersfield Giants this lunchtime, something McShane admits feels like a special match for the club.

“I think it’s a really good occasion,” the 36-year-old told League Express and totalrl.com.

“Fans from all over Super League are in one place, and I think it just builds through the weekend. To have York be there, at something a lot of my teammates haven’t experienced, I think will be great. 

“I think we’re going over the night before as well. It’s like a bit of a different feel and it feels like a special occasion. Hopefully it’ll be a special one for us all.”

McShane, who took on a player-coach role upon joining the Knights ahead of last season, had seemed set to close out his career playing part-time in the Championship, but following the club’s promotion, finds himself back in the top flight.

“The big thing about me carrying on this year was making history for the club and the city,” he explained.

“We’ve ticked off Super League, we’ve won at Wembley (in the 1895 Cup), and we’re now at a Magic Weekend, so it’s pretty nice.”
