SAUASO SUE says he still has plenty more to give after signing up for what is likely to be his final year at Hull KR.
The former Samoan international has become a cornerstone of the Robins’ pack since arriving ahead of the 2023 campaign, with his one-year contract extension taking him into a fifth season at the club.
Playing a key role both on and off the pitch, he has become a fan favourite, and is closing in on 100 appearances for the East Hull club, for whom he has helped lift the Challenge Cup, League Leaders’ Shield, Grand Final and World Club Challenge over the last two seasons.
The 34-year-old featured for Wests Tigers, Canterbury Bulldogs and Newcastle Knights in the NRL before joining the Robins at the same time as coach Willie Peters.
Peters, who will be succeeded by Nathan Cayliss next year, admitted: “Did I think he’d get five years out of him? No. He’s exceeded expectations.
“He had a couple of injuries and head knocks and I felt going into that age bracket, two or three years would see him out.
“It’s a credit to what he does away from the field – he eats well, trains well, does the recovery and the prep that’s needed.
“When you see that first hand, it soon changes your mind. He’s got better with age. He’s the fittest he’s ever been.”
Sue said: “I came over open minded. I knew it would be a tough game over here. If you come here with the wrong mindset, you’ll be in for a shock.
“I came with my family to make the most of it and I’ve given my all. We’ve really enjoyed our time here, made some great friends and some even better memories. I’ve one more year and we’ll hopefully make some more memories.”
He gives Peters much of the credit for their run of success, saying: “He knows connection is important and he’s created that good environment and culture here.
“I came at the same time as Willie and I’ve seen the standards he’s driven here – the Hull KR way, we call it.
“It’s good to see everyone that comes into the team buying into it. It does work.”
