WIGAN WARRIORS coach Matt Peet was pleased to have some of his big-name players return in the win over St Helens, but he still feels the whole team can improve.
Bevan French and Liam Marshall both returned to the starting line-up following hamstring issues, Sam Walters was back on the bench after a seven-match suspension for his red card in the Challenge Cup Final and Noah Hodkinson was also on the bench following a fractured skull.
French in particular was outstanding as the Warriors extended their winning run to eight in Super League.
“He’s a quality player,” said Peet on French after the 38-16 win, in which he scored one try and assisted four others.
“I thought he defended well too. It was good to have him back amongst it, along with along with Liam, Sam and Noah, and he’ll be better for that hit out.
“Bevan was fine tonight, I was in two minds like with Brad O’Neill (both were brought off) – it’s better to be safe than sorry.”
On the game, Peet added: “I’m pleased with the two points and I think we came through healthy, which is always important.
“Patches of the game we put our game together, but we weren’t consistent enough with the ball. Particularly once we got in front, we got a bit loose.
“I kind of get that with Bevan and Brad coming off, it probably put us under a bit of pressure.
“I thought at the start there were elements of bad luck. The Taylor Kerr penalty and Marshall penalty were (correctly awarded) penalties, but we had not done a lot wrong.
“We need to defend them better and be a bit more resilient, but in second half we showed that.”
