WILLIE PETERS liked what he saw from Ryan Hampshire in only his fourth appearance for Hull KR.
Mikey Lewis’ suspension and Arthur Mourgue’s broken thumb meant a recall for veteran Hampshire at halfback in their 40-16 win against Bradford Bulls.
He was picked ahead of Jack Charles, the ex-Hull FC youngster who is yet to make his Super League debut for the Robins.
“Ryan Hampshire created opportunities to create points which is what we want,” said coach Peters.
“The way we play meets Ryan’s style, along with (fullback) Jack Broadbent.
“I have mentioned that Jack Charles will be halfback at this club for a long time, but currently we’re going with Ryan.”
Reflecting on the match, Peters said: “We started well, scored an early try (through Joe Burgess) and that made us feel good.
“We went away from what we wanted to do but turned it round to earn points.
“I was happy with the attitude in the way we started the second half, but we had chances to score (more) points and we didn’t.
“It’s two points, but there is improvement in us.
“We spoke about being patient before the game and we did show some but not enough.
“We have things to work on, especially with the 16 points we conceded.”
Burgess went on to score the second try he needed to reach 200 in his career, and Peters said: “I’m pleased Joe has got there.
“He’s a pivotal player for us and, along with (fellow winger) Tom Davies they are always a threat.
“Elliot Minchella stood out tonight, I thought he was very good, and Jez Litten also.”
