BRAD ARTHUR says it’s no problem if Matt Lodge is using his time at Leeds Rhinos to “put himself in the shop window” for next season.
Australian prop Lodge recently signed for Leeds Rhinos on a deal only for the rest of this year.
Beyond that, the 31-year-old has yet to sort out his future following an early release from North Queensland Cowboys.
For Arthur, Lodge’s signing is one that could work out for all parties, with title-seeking Leeds getting the pack reinforcement they need for the run-in.
“He’s looking forward to it and we are looking forward to see what he can do in the final few games,” Arthur said.
“He is excited to play well. I’m not fussed what the motivations are for different people. He’s putting himself in the shop window – whether that’s the shop window here or back in Australia.
“He hasn’t got anything lined up as far as I know but he just wants to get some game time and play well and then he can put himself in a position where he has a few options.
“That might be here, at another Super League club or back in the NRL. If he plays well and puts himself in a position where clubs are interested in him then it’s a plus for us.”
Arthur also revealed that his admiration for Lodge goes back years, with the 52-year-old wanting to sign the enforcer whilst head coach of Parramatta Eels.
“I was close to getting him for Parramatta at one stage and it didn’t work out,” said Arthur.
“I’ve known him throughout his NRL journey, I’ve watched his journey and he offered us his services which is handy at this time of year.
“He’s a big body and he’s got plenty of experience.”
