JAY PITTS reached the career milestone of 450 games in Wakefield Trinity’s key 28-12 win over York Knights – but this season will be his last with the club.
The 36-year-old began his career with Wakefield and, after spells with Leeds Rhinos, Hull FC, Bradford Bulls and London Broncos, returned in 2020.
Despite his advanced years, the forward has been a central figure in Wakefield’s renaissance, playing 32 games in their Championship year, 28 on their Super League return last season, and now a further 26 this season to hit his latest landmark.
After contributing to the play-offs, for which Wakefield ensured qualification with that York result, Pitts will be leaving the club, despite having had another year to run on his deal.
He is to depart alongside overseas duo Mason Lino and Lachlan Walmsley.
Coach Daryl Powell, who has lost Oliver Pratt (hamstring), Matty Storton (knee) and possibly Tray Lolesio (hamstring) for the rest of the season, said: “I can’t speak more highly of him, how tough he is, what a great bloke he is.
“He’s a real leader, a great voice and a positive influence on the team. He’s got better with age.
“He’s been to a few clubs across his career and everyone would speak positively about him. He’s been a top-quality player for us since I’ve known him.
“It’s not just on the field, it’s his standards in training, his leadership, and the way he is as a person.
“He’s a really durable player, and that’s testament to how hard he works off the field. He’s constantly training, he rarely misses a session.
“His ankle has given him trouble at times this year but he wants to be on the field. The physios have to drag him off.”
Wakefield, who are also letting winger Will Tate and prop Noah High leave, are now two points clear of Leigh Leopards, whom they play in the final round, in a battle for fourth position, the last home play-off spot.
Third-placed Warrington Wolves visit the DIY Kitchens Stadium on Saturday.
