HUDDERSFIELD GIANTS coach Jim Lenihan says Cole Geyer won’t be coming back to the club in future after Oldham recalled the hooker.
The Australian has impressed since going to the Accu Stadium in May, scoring four tries in 14 appearances.
But instead of featuring in Huddersfield’s final two Super League games, Geyer will take part in the Championship play-offs with Oldham, starting on Sunday at home to 1895 Cup runners-up Widnes Vikings.
Beyond that, the 25-year-old ex-Burleigh Bears player has been linked with a move to Bradford Bulls for next season.
“With the system in place, Oldham had their right to bring him back and we’re stuck with that decision,” said Lenihan, who will also be without fullback George Flanagan for the remainder of the campaign due to a calf tear.
“Unfortunately I don’t think we can fit him into what we’ve got next year. He’s done a wonderful job this year, but at this point, with our possible inclusions for next year, he’s one we’re unable to keep.”
Geyer made 14 appearances for Oldham earlier in the season and is excited to make an impact in the play-offs after the Roughyeds came third in the regular season.
“It feels good to be back at Oldham with the lads and I’m now looking forward to finishing the year strong and hopefully winning it all,” he said.
“Being at Huddersfield was great – I enjoyed the challenge of playing Super League week in, week out and I learnt a lot from all the staff.
“I have kept an eye on the Oldham results and stayed in contact with many of the lads so it was good to see them finish the year well.
“I’m confident we can really shake the finals up.”
Oldham coach Alan Kilshaw said: “We’d like to thank Huddersfield Giants for their understanding and professionalism in helping us bring Cole back to Oldham for the play-offs.
“We appreciate the way they have handled the situation and recognised what this opportunity means to Cole and to our group at this stage of the season.”
