THE funeral of Wigan and Great Britain legend Sir Billy Boston will take place at the Warriors’ Brick Community Stadium on Thursday, September 10 at 12.30pm.

The Cardiff-born winger who scored 571 career tries, 478 of them in 488 games for Wigan between 1953 and 1968, and was last year awarded Rugby League’s first knighthood, died aged 92 on August 24.

The Warriors paid a moving tribute (pictured above) at their recent home Super League fixture against Hull KR.

A limited number of supporters will be able to attend the funeral, with the main West Stand open as the coffin passes down the stadium tunnel.

The service, conducted by Father Paul Grady, will also be livestreamed free on Wigan TV, and an order of service booklet will be available to download via wiganwarriors.com.

Attendance will be limited to enable the club to safely work to capacity limits. Attendees are required to make a £1 per person donation online via the club website.

Full proceeds will go to Wigan and Leigh Hospice in memory of Sir Billy and Lady Joan Boston, his wife of 70 years who died aged 90 on July 23.

The stadium turnstiles will open from 11.15am and those with a pass are encouraged to be seated by 12.15pm.

At the request of the Boston family, anyone in attendance is encouraged to wear traditional funeral attire, but items of cherry red, such as scarves, ties and headwear, can be worn.

Those not in attendance at the stadium are welcome to pay their respects to the passing funeral cortege as it proceeds through Wigan (a route map will be available in due course).

A private burial will take place following the service. The funeral will be family flowers only, but any additional donations to Wigan and Leigh Hospice can be made via the club website.
