WARRINGTON WOLVES winger Matty Ashton has admitted that Saturday’s Grand Final showdown with Wakefield Trinity is a dream come true.
It will be Ashton’s first Grand Final appearance, and, after joining the Cheshire club back in 2020, it will be a moment to savour for the flyer.
“It feels pretty special and I’m really excited for it,” Ashton said.
“It’s something I have dreamed about since I was a kid, watching Grand Finals and hoping one day that I get the chance to play here and lift the trophy.
“They don’t call it (Old Trafford) the Theatre of Dreams for nothing.”
Looking back to Warrington’s 14-12 win over Leeds Rhinos last Friday, Ashton was convinced Jake Connor would kick a last-minute penalty to take the game into golden-point.
However, Connor missed and Warrington were confirmed winners.
“It was relief more than anything I think,” said Ashton. “We didn’t really play our game but it was too close to call.
“I thought Jake Connor was going to nail that kick because if anyone can do it, it’s him.
“I was stood behind the sticks and it didn’t actually look that far out.
“It missed and the overriding emotion was relief. It’s something we have moved on from now.”
The Wolves will come up against Wakefield Trinity in Saturday’s decider.
And, following a superb 33-6 demolition of Wigan Warriors, Wakefield are going to be no easy beats.
Ashton said: “They were very good. Everyone’s going to watch it with it being the semi-final.
“They are a big group of lads with a big forward pack. It will be something that we will be looking to match.”
