Lee Briers leaves St Helens

ST HELENS will have an all-new coaching line-up next season after confirmation that Lee Briers has departed after two years at the Super League club.

Briers, 48, joined Saints as assistant coach ahead of the 2025 campaign on a two-year deal, serving as understudy to Paul Wellens and then Paul Rowley, as well as interim coach Eamon O’Carroll towards the back end of last season.

Now, however, the former Warrington Wolves halfback is set to “explore a new opportunity” following the culmination of his contract, having been linked with a move to Perth Bears under the NRL newcomers’ coach Mal Meninga.

In a brief statement, the club said: “St Helens would like to thank Lee for his efforts and commitment during his time as assistant coach and wish him and his family the very best for the future.”

With O’Carroll now working for Welsh rugby union side Scarlets, there will be an entirely new coaching team led by incoming boss Kevin Walters.

Walters, who worked alongside Briers at Brisbane Broncos and was his teammate at Warrington more than two decades ago, will take charge after leading Australia at the upcoming World Cup but is yet to confirm who his assistants will be.

After retiring as a player, Briers joined Warrington’s coaching staff, progressing from the academy to the first team as an assistant coach.

He was part of Matt Peet’s coaching staff at Wigan Warriors when Peet was appointed as head coach and subsequently moved to Brisbane Broncos to work in the NRL.

Briers was also part of the England coaching set-up under Shaun Wane for several years.

During his time as a player with Warrington, he amassed over 2,500 points for the Wolves, scoring 154 tries and kicking 947 goals and 74 drop goals in 425 appearances.

Briers initially began his career with St Helens, registering just six appearances in 1997 before moving to Warrington.
