Veteran Jarrod Sammut open to another season in England

JARROD Sammut might soon be turning 40, but returning to the international stage with Malta has only served to reignite his passion for Rugby League.

The veteran playmaker last donned a domestic shirt for Keighley Cougars in 2025, the eleventh club of his career, but played just three times before his contract was terminated by mutual consent.

In total, he has almost 300 appearances across the English game, counting the likes of London Broncos, Barrow Raiders, Workington Town, Bradford Bulls, North Wales Crusaders and Wakefield Trinity among his former clubs.

But, some 20 years after first pulling on the Malta jersey, Sammut is still delivering on the international stage, slotting the winning field-goal in a dramatic 29-28 victory over Germany in Hattingen last weekend.

Malta next take on Greece, knowing victory will see them promoted back to Group B of the European Championship, and the 39-year-old is enjoying being along for the ride.

‘‘To say that I’ve missed it (Rugby League) would be a huge understatement,” explained the former Penrith Panthers back.

“Last week, being back in that environment, and to lace them back up again and get amongst it – it is something that I thoroughly enjoy, and really got a buzz under my bonnet.

“I’m really looking forward to this week’s game against Greece, and seeing what comes from that after that.’’

Whilst unclear what the future holds, Sammut has not shut the door on another season in England.

And he admitted: “I’d love to get back playing again.

“Obviously, due to work commitments and family, I’ve had a bit of time off.

“But after last week and again this week, I’d love to lace them up and get back out and run it again at a higher level next season.”
