London Broncos happy to secure new training base

LONDON BRONCOS are looking forward to using a new training base ahead of what they hope will be a Super League campaign in 2027.

They will operate on a day-to-day basis from The Lensbury, a hotel with leisure and sports facilities on the banks of the River Thames at Teddington in the south-west of the capital and renowned for hosting sports teams, from pre-season.

The Championship Grand Final and 1895 Cup winners, who have been playing home matches at the Cherry Red Records Stadium at Wimbledon, had been using the Hazelwood Centre at Sunbury-on-Thames.

But back in February, they had a run-out at The Lenbsury when Brisbane Broncos, where London co-owner Darren Lockyer (pictured) was a celebrated player, were preparing for their World club Challenge meeting with Hull KR at that city’s MKM Stadium.

The two Broncos faced off in an opposed training session, giving Jason Demetriou, the coach of ambitious London, a chance to test his squad against elite opposition.

The Lensbury was established in 1920 as a sports and social club for employees of the oil company Shell.

It was sold to L+R hotels in 2019 and as well as more than 150 rooms, has extensive conference and sports facilities.

The Lensbury was used by England during last year’s Ashes series and has also hosted a number of international rugby union sides as well as football teams.

Broncos co-owner Grant Wechsel said: “It is a privilege for London Broncos to make The Lensbury our home base in 2027, as the first full-time professional sports team to be based at the facility permanently for many years.

“We look forward to striving for further excellence from there in 2027. With a permanent home now secured, attention turns to preparing the squad for the challenge of the new season.”
