THE NRL’s Parramatta Eels sprung a surprise last week by appointing former St Helens CEO Mike Rush as its new chief executive.
It’s the first time, as far as I can remember, that an Englishman has been appointed as the CEO of an NRL club.
The nearest parallel I can think of is the appointment of Blake Solly at South Sydney in 2016, when he had previously been the general manager of the Super League competition.
But of course Blake is an Australian who had initially come to England to work as a lawyer.
So to land the job with the Eels is a great achievement by Mike Rush. I assume that the Eels have looked at the great success enjoyed by St Helens while Mike was in charge and they will be hoping he can bring some of that success to a club that has largely under-achieved since it last won an NRL Premiership in 1986.
“It’s an enormous privilege to be appointed CEO of the Parramatta Eels,” said Mike.
“This is one of Rugby League’s great clubs, with a proud history, passionate supporters and a deep connection to its community.
“I’m honoured to be given this opportunity. My focus will be on building a Premiership-winning club that develops its own talent and makes our members and community proud.
“My priorities are clear: to support the Eels football department across the men’s and women’s programs, to grow our membership and commercial base and to make sure every Eels member and fan feels part of the club.
“Parramatta has a strong foundation and enormous potential. I want to thank the Chairman and the Board for their confidence and trust in me, and I can’t wait to get started.
Mike will begin his role immediately from his home in England while his visa requirements are worked through.
I would like to wish him the very best of luck in his new role.
It would be fascinating to see some more English administrators follow in his footsteps.
