New signing links with St Helens’ academy tourists

NEW St Helens halfback Sean O’Sullivan got some early training in by joining the club’s Academy squad for a session on their ongoing Australia tour.

O’Sullivan, who has 66 NRL appearances to his name, is joining Saints next season from Canterbury Bulldogs as a replacement for Jackson Hastings.

He’s one of only three additions announced so far, alongside fellow overseas quota players Solomona Faataape (Catalans Dragons) and Christian Tuipulotu (St George Illawarra Dragons), both outside backs.

Before heading to England for the start of pre-season in November, O’Sullivan got to know Saints’ latest crop of teenage talent, who are on a three-week tour.

The 28-year-old trained with their 27-strong travelling party ahead of the second of their four tour matches and said: “It was good to meet the young lads and introduce myself.

“It was a really good training session and it’s lovely to see how excited they all are to be over in Australia.

“I’m super excited to get over, I’ve been getting training sessions in for myself and when I heard about the Saints lads being over here and in Sydney, I thought it’d be a great excuse to jump in and join in with the drills.”

After a 24-18 defeat to Balmain Tigers in their opening game, Saints’ youngsters got the better of Central Coast Sports College in their next fixture, winning 22-18.

They faced Westfield Sports High School yesterday (Sunday) and finish against Balmain District on Friday before returning home.

It’s the ninth Academy tour the club have had in Australia since their first in 2004.
