Oldham excited by Connor Sayner signing

OLDHAM coach Alan Kilshaw reckons supporters will be excited by new fullback Connor Sayner.

The 20-year-old has signed a two-year contract to join from Keighley Cougars, where he made his professional debut under Kilshaw after coming through the Bradford Bulls youth system.

Sayner went on to play 38 times in two seasons for Keighley, scoring 14 tries including seven in his final eight appearances.

He must now replace Jack Walker, the former Super League fullback who has left Oldham after scoring 16 tries in his one-season stay, but Kilshaw believes Sayner can do just that.

“I gave him his first-grade debut at Keighley, and since I came to Oldham (in January as an assistant coach, becoming head coach the following month) I’ve been really keen to get him here.

“He’s got a big future in the game and, incredibly, he doesn’t turn 21 until June.

“I think he’s someone our supporters are going to be really excited about. He has speed and agility to burn, he’s tough, and he has a real hunger to improve.

“I feel our environment, alongside the quality and experience we have within the squad, will really suit him.

“I’m confident he can thrive here and light up the Championship next season.”

The love is mutual between Sayner, who joins close friend Lucas Green in swapping Keighley for Oldham, and Kilshaw.

“Ever since giving me my debut, it seems like he trusts me,” said Sayner.

“Getting along with your head coach does play a big part, and he has brought out a lot of confidence in me.

“As soon as I heard that Oldham were interested, I wanted to sign. It’s a big club and Oldham have done well this year (coming third and reaching the play-off semi-finals), so I am absolutely buzzing about the move.”
