Hull KR youngster earns Goole Vikings contract

GOOLE VIKINGS hope to see “local lad” Joe Thompson provide competition at halfback next season after signing the youngster from Hull KR.

Thompson hails from Gilberdyke, a village around seven miles north-east of Goole, and spent time in the systems of both Hull FC and their city rivals.

The 20-year-old got his first taste of senior rugby over the summer, making two appearances at hooker for Dewsbury Rams.

“Joe is a smart footballer with a good kicking game and he’ll provide some solid depth and competition for places in our spine,” said Vikings coach Brett Ferres.

“He’s a local lad, so he knows what we’re building in Goole and what it means for the region. He’s really keen to be part of that.

“He comes to us with some solid references from people we trust and, having had a taste of Championship rugby last season, he’s eager to prove he can kick on now.

“He fits the bill as another young, hungry player keen to prove himself.”

Goole recently added forwards Alfie Petty and Jon Turner from Hull KR and FC respectively.

While losing the experienced Jack Miller, who is taking time out of the game, the Vikings have kept hold of fellow halfback Callum Rutland and the versatile Morgan Punchard.
