KEIGHLEY COUGARS have made Australian centre or backrower Kye Jacobson their latest recruit as coach Matt Bramald continues to shape a new-look squad for his first season in charge.
And the 24-year-old who was once in the Newcastle Knights system has something to prove in the UK professional game after being unable to establish himself at Swinton Lions after a tough time at Cornwall, who brought him over for the 2025 League One campaign but folded just three games in.
After a fruitless trial at Workington Town, Jacobson joined southern amateur side Bedford Tigers for the remainder of that season.
He signed for Swinton this time last year, but failed to make an appearance, although he did turn out in the community game for Rochdale Mayfield and featured four times for North Wales Crusaders after their mid-season relaunch following insolvency.
Jacobson grew up in Newcastle, New South Wales and caught the eye playing for Macquarie Scorpions in the local competition.
“Kye is someone we’re really pleased to bring into the squad,” said Bramald.
“His versatility gives us options, and we’re looking forward to working with him in pre-season.
“He’s keen to be part of what we’re building, and we want to give him the opportunity to kick on here.”
Head of rugby operations Richard Dibbin added: “Kye made it clear he wanted to come to Keighley, and it’s been a pleasure getting the deal over the line.
“We’re delighted he’s signed and are looking forward to seeing him get started with Matty, (assistant coach) Ryan Jackson and the lads.”
Other Cougars additions include winger Jayden Billy and forward Marcus Green, both from Sheffield Eagles, Rochdale Hornets forwards Isaac Coleman and Jay Scriven (Jackson has also moved from the Crown Oil Arena club) and Batley Buuldogs threequarter Ollie Greensmith.
