Barrow Raiders promote another player to first-team squad

BARROW RAIDERS have continued to promote from within after a second Under 19 player in as many weeks stepped up to the first-team scene on a permanent basis.

Hot on the heels of Darcy Southward, forward Sam Unsworth has done the same following an impressive showing in her first year at the club.

Having started playing with Orrell St James at the age of 15, Unsworth enjoyed a short spell with Salford’s second team, before being invited to join the Raiders Under 19 set-up earlier this season by head coach Amanda Wilkinson.

It is there where she really caught the eye and was handed a senior debut against Leeds in June, before following it up with a second first-team appearance against Leigh.

Now that she is a regular member of the first-team set-up, Unsworth will be pushing for opportunities as the Shield competition progresses.

“Sam has shone right from the moment she arrived with our Under 19s,” said Wilkinson. “She is an aggressive and powerful forward, and will be a welcome addition to our team.”
