BATLEY BULLDOGS coach James Ford says there is a place in his back row for new signing Lewis Hagan – if the youngster puts in the hard work.
The 24-year-old, who can also play at centre, has joined Batley from Bradford Bulls, where he made a strong impression in their Reserves side over two seasons.
Named their second team’s Player of the Year by both his coach and teammates in 2025, his first season after joining the Bulls from Leeds amateur side Oulton Raiders, Hagan signed his first professional contract with Hunslet last autumn.
However, he was unable to add to the three senior appearances made on loan with Newcastle Thunder the previous year, and returned to Bradford.
Hagan will hope it’s second time lucky at the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium, where Batley have lost dependable back-rower Lucas Walshaw to retirement but signed Nick Staveley from Sheffield Eagles and retained stalwart Dane Manning.
Ford, who led Batley to tenth in his first season at the helm, said: “Lewis is a talented young player who has played in a number of positions over his career.
“He was highly recommended from a coach I trust at Bradford and the footage backed up his opinions.
“If Lewis works hard at developing himself and his game, we will be excited to see him challenge for a spot in our back row.”
Ford is also keen to observe the progress of Leo Aliyu, the Leeds Rhinos-produced prop recently signed from Keighley Cougars.
Aliyu, 22, was limited to eight games last season after being stood down with concussion issues, having impressed in twelve appearances the previous year.
“He is a very athletic player with his best years ahead of him,” said Ford.
“I’m very confident our supporters will enjoy his strength of carry.”
