Broncos sign a Red Devil

London Broncos have signed former Salford second rower Matt Gee on a one-year deal.

Gee, 21, originally joined the Red Devils from Orrell St James, playing with the under-19s in 2014, before making a handful of Super League appearances in 2015. He then spent 2016 on loan with Workington, at first enjoying a one month stint, which was subsequently extended.

“I’ll always be grateful for the opportunities Salford and Workington gave me, and I’ve really loved my time with both clubs, but it was time for a change in my career,” commented Gee.

“I’m really excited for the move down south, and the chance to play with London. I’ve had a good taste of Championship experience with Town this year, and I’m excited to help the Broncos in their challenge for promotion back to Super League.

“2017 should be a good year.”

London head coach, Andrew Henderson, believes that Gee has the potential to develop further with his club.

“Matt is a utility forward and can play anywhere in the pack, so will add further strength in depth and competition for places,” said Henderson.

“I see him primarily as a loose forward, but the fact he can play on the edge as a backrower and up front swayed me to secure his services. Add to the fact he had a good season on loan at Workington and was one of their better performers on a regular basis.

“I do tend to look for players that go under the radar, and take a chance on players hungry for an opportunity, and Matt fits the bill.

“He came through the Salford youth system and has been in a full time environment for the past few years. Even though his Super League opportunities have been limited – making a handful of appearances – he has held his own, with plenty of games under his belt in the Championship for a young fella.

“Rugby League is generally a late developing sport, so I believe Matt has his best years ahead of him and will come into his own. I’m confident we will improve him in our programme and he will prove to be a valuable member of the squad in 2017.”
