Brown hauls himself off sickbed to hammer Hull

Widnes Vikings captain Kevin Brown stole the show again during Thursday’s hammering of Hull – and coach Denis Betts revealed afterwards that he hauled himself up from his sickbed to play in the game.

Brown was sensational during the 46-6 victory, but it wasn’t until after the game when Betts revealed the extent of Brown’s illness – and that was he actually on a drip.

Brown laid on a number of tries as Widnes continued their strong start to the season, with this their fifth win from six games.

“He was on a drip yesterday because he was ill,” Betts said. “He was massively dehydrated and his blood count was down. We had to get him hydrated to play.”

Betts quickly praised his captain’s performance out on the field, too.

“He’s the leader of this group and he was fantastic for us. I say it every week. He’s never under-performed since he’s been here. He makes decisions on the hoof that only a good player can make.”
