Bulldogs edge out Rams in Boxing Day challenge

Batley Bulldogs got their pre-season off to a good start with a 4-12 victory today against Dewsbury Rams at Tetley’s Stadium, winning the Roy Powell Trophy, which is named after the iconic international player who came from the Heavy Woollen area, but who died suddenly two days after Christmas in 1998.

Both clubs fielded sides that were made up of experienced players and youngsters, and after a tight first half in difficult conditions the Rams led 4-0, with Jason Crookes having touched down after 19 minutes.

But the second half belonged to the Bulldogs, who opened their account with an Alex Bretherton try that came from a  Shaun Ainscough kick, with Dominic Brambani converting to give them the lead.

Ainscough then scored a try of his own from a cutout pass by Cain Southernwood to take the score to 4-10 before Pat Walker added a late penalty to complete the scoring.
