Campese to captain Hull KR

Hull KR coach Chris Chester has confirmed that former Canberra skipper Terry Campese will captain Hull KR in 2015, in his first season with the club, taking over from the 2014 co-captaincy of Josh Hodgson and Travis Burns, both of whom have left the club.

“I thought Terry was a natural candidate. He’s an experienced player and he’s been captain for Canberra, but it’s more what he brings to the role off the field as well,” said Chester.

Campese, 30, signed a one-year deal with the Robins in December and he is expected to lead the Robins when they take on Halifax on Sunday at the KC Lightstream Stadium in Jason Netherton’s testimonial game.

“It’s a huge honour for me. This club’s got a lot of history behind it, it’s a very proud club and I can’t wait to run out there with the boys,” said Campese.

Chester said that Campese was a natural choice for the role.

“I thought Terry was a natural candidate. He’s an experienced player and he’s been captain for Canberra, but it’s more what he brings to the role off the field as well,” said Chester.

“He sets certain standards at training and is very clear on how he wants his team to be off the field. I’ve been really impressed with how he’s settled in and brought everybody together. He’s a genuinely good guy and he made it an easy decision for me.

“We had some other good candidates for the captaincy in Darrell Goulding, Mick Weyman and Tyrone McCarthy and while we haven’t chosen a vice-captain, I want to encourage all of the boys to be leaders and speak their minds. I think they will be able to do that this year, they’re a good group and a very close group.”
