Carribean Maritime claim Intercollegiate 9s Championship

The start of the eighth season of Intercollegiate Rugby League in Jamaica has been marked by CMU winning their first title, taking out the annual 9s championship. It is a remarkable turnaround for the club, formed only two years ago and who finished bottom of the table last season.

Six sides, split into two groups of three, contested the tournament, held at the Duhaney Park Mini Stadium.

CMU defeated Mico University Crocs (20-8) and the University of West Indies Pelicans (12-8) in their group, followed by Excelsior Community College Eagles in the semi final (16-4), and finally UWI again in the decider (16-5). University of Technology Knights and GC Foster Lions were the other competitors.

CMU were led by tournament MVP, Reinardo Richards, who is on a scholarship there and one of the country’s top rugby league players, alongside drian Brown and Orlando Messado.

“CMU has showed vast improvement and their commitment and investment in the education and sporting prowess of their student athletes was evident,” commented Intercol rugby league chair, Romeo Monteith.  “The quality of play from all teams was very good, and it is clear that Intercol continues to be a nursery for some of Jamaica’s top rugby league players.”
