Catalans Dragons preparing for ‘uncertain future’

CATALANS DRAGONS may be in holiday-mode but club officials are busy making plans for next season and they are preparing for an “uncertain future.”

Chief Executive Sebastien Munoz told Perpignan radio station Ici Roussillon that “the future is uncertain” for French clubs in English-based competitions and every effort was being made to ensure the Dragons had a long and healthy future ahead.

Concerned at uncertainty about the makeup of the 2026 Super League competition and whether or not it will contain 14 teams, and the outcome of the Nigel Wood-led Strategic Review, Munoz said it was “only sensible” to plan for all eventualities.

There is some opposition to French clubs within Super League and the issue is part of Wood’s review.

“We are confident that we are a successful and well-run club, which adds a great deal to the competition,” said Munoz.

“But like any business we have to take precautions, we have had additional financial pressures this year and these will increase as we go forward.

“At the same time discussions are being held about the participation of French clubs. While we hope this will continue forever, it is correct business practice to prepare for all eventualities.”

Munoz’s comments follow statements released by French Federation President Dominique Baloup which said the French Rugby League’s governing body was forming closer links with the Australian NRL.

Baloup said he was in regular contact with Australian Rugby League Commission chief Peter V’Landys and discussions had already taken place regarding a future French Super League backed by Australian money.

International Rugby League chief Troy Grant has already set out his organisation’s commitment to supporting French Rugby League, seeing is as “crucial for the future success of the game in Europe.”

Munoz did not speak about any FFRXIII plans but it is clear from the radio interview that Catalans are keeping their options open until the results of the RFL Strategic Review are known.
