League 1 to turn amateur? Clubs set to discuss possible de-regulation of League 1

Championship and League 1 clubs will meet today to discuss the possible de-regulation of League 1.

Representatives from all the clubs will head to Doncaster today with discussions set to take place about potentially turning the competition amateur.

It remains to be seen how the change would affect the clubs currently in the division and the overall structure of the league. There are currently 14 teams in League 1 including the likes of Bradford Bulls, Oldham, and Whitehaven.

TotalRL has acquired a copy of the agenda for the meetings, and on there, part of the itinerary includes a discussion about the ‘Possible de-regulation of League 1’ among other items.

Other topics on the agenda at the meeting include Summer Bash, broadcasting contracts and parachute payments.

It is understood that the term de-regulation relates to making the competition amateur – though it is unclear whether that notion has any support, and when any such changes are being proposed for.

More on this story will appear in Monday’s League Express.
