DEWSBURY RAMS coach Paul March has urged his evolving side to put their defeat at Barrow Raiders down to experience – and use the bitter disappointment to learn key lessons about game management.
The Yorkshire visitors dominated the first half to lead 28-0 at the break – only to be put under the cosh in the second as the home side hit back for a 39-28 victory, their fifth in a row.
“It was obviously a tough one for us all to take,” said March (pictured), whose side had won seven out of 14 league matches previously.
“We’d talked about the need to start strongly, and we certainly did that, and while Barrow were off the pace, we were playing well and able to capitalise on their errors.
“They are a good side, and I knew what was coming after they’d had a chance to regroup at half-time.
“We spoke about Barrow wanting to come out all guns blazing and how we needed to try to take the sting out of that.
“But then we started coming up with errors, they started to take advantage, the momentum started to change, and we just couldn’t get it back.”
March pointed out: “This is a young team, which is the way we’ve chosen to go, and that lack of experience showed in terms of game management.
“When we needed to do things which might have put the brakes on Barrow, we weren’t able to, and we paid the price.
“It wasn’t about any lack of effort, because there was plenty there and there has been all season, and I can’t really blame the players.
“But we need to learn to be a bit smarter, and hopefully that will come as the group continue to develop.”
