Cunningham keen to keep Walsh at Saints

St Helens coach Keiron Cunningham has revealed ahead of tonight’s game at Salford that he would love for Luke Walsh to stay at the club in 2016.

Walsh is out of contract at the end of this season, but has started 2016 well with a good performance in Saints’ opening weekend win against Huddersfield last Friday.

And, speaking to the St Helens Star, Cunningham says he’d be keen to tie Walsh down to a new deal – but is waiting to see where he wants to play his rugby in 2017.

“Luke is a great player and a great talent and he is somebody I would love to keep around if I possibly could,” he said.

“That is how highly I regard him – he is a great player and the boys enjoy playing alongside him.

“He is one of our leaders and it would be sad if we lose him, but if he has ambitions to go back to the NRL then I can’t stop that.

“I would love him to stay and have made him openly aware of that, but he will be having conversations with his missus and so we will see where he decides to lay his hat.”
