St Helens coach Keiron Cunningham was seemingly resigned to losing fullback Shannon McDonnell for a lengthy period due to injury – which could leave the Saints incredibly short at the back.
Jonny Lomax and Paul Wellens are already out injured with knee and hip knocks respectively, and their woes at fullback were further compounded when McDonnell left the field during the final moments of the Saints’ 25-24 defeat to Castleford.
McDonnell went down unchallenged with what appeared to be an Achilles problem, and it is understood he left the Mend-A-Hose Jungle in a protective boot following the game.
“It’s just the way our luck is going at the minute,” Cunningham added. “It’s a shame for Shannon because he’s filled a great gap for us and he was very good again tonight. It’s unfortunate for the kid.”
